Hello,

I'm newer to Austin (about a year) and wondering if anyone can recommend a good area to train flats in south/southwest. If not that area, anywhere around Austin. I'm looking for somewhere I can test my speed during training every couple weeks.

Thanks.

The Veloway (http://www.veloway.com/)might serve you well.

There is a place southeast of Austin called Houston that is perfect for that kind of thing...

I live a block from the Veloway. It's not very hilly but still not flat enough for a minimum-variance time trial IMHO. Houston is a little too far to drive that often! I'm trying to find somewhere I can ride in a straight, flat line (or gentle curve) that goes in a loop or has a easy turnaround to test my speed. Using Joe Friel's book he recommends every few weeks doing a time trial to see how your fitness is going.

What sort of distance do you need to test your speed? Is this over a couple miles or 20 to 50 miles?

The South Austin to San Marcos route offers several sections that are pretty straight and flat. The one that comes to mind is the stretch that goes past Aquarena Springs. Also...east of 35 I'm sure there are some good, relatively flat stretches of road. I just don't know where they are.
