i was looking over here: http://www.surlybikes.com/spew3.html and reading point #7 made me really nervous about my drivetrain. i dont like to replace stuff until it causes me to crash and die, but i have been having problems with my chainring getting all eliptical and egg-shaped, making chain-tension a highly variable thing, depending on where my pedals are at. so, i was wondering, how often do y'all replace your chainrings/rear cogs/chains? i replace my chain pretty frequently, and i've changed my rear cog once (cuz i had to) in the year+ that i've been riding my fix. am i do for new stuff?

oh, just another l'il thought: yes, i know the link is a discussion on 1 spd off-road drivetrains, but i'm thinking it applies to me, too. plus, i do hear all sorts of horrid pops and pings when i'm hammering.

you might want to be replacing that drivetrain about now...

i haven't replaced anything but my chain on either of my track bikes for a while...unless i'm playing with gearing...i've pretty much had the same 16T cog on one bike or another for the last 3 years...there was a time when i used a 15T, and a 13T...but i always come back to the 16 on that bike...

i'm getting to the point where i'll have to change my chainring on my lotus because it's getting really REALLY worn, but the only replacement i have for it is a blue ring, and it would really screw up my all black/pink/silver color scheme...

real men spraypaint their chainrings gold

and the realest of the real men spraypaint their chainrings pink

and i really am thinking about spraypainting my old khs rear wheel gold for fun.

BLING BLANG FIXIE!

just get a gold cross for the rear wheel instead of the messenger cards

One thing I noticed the other day on one of my chain rings is that the inside of the tooth cut out profile had some burrs on it. I took a whetstone and polished off the burrs and that stopped the noises that were happening on that bike. I don't know what caused the burrs. They may have been there from manufacturing. The chain is not stretched and the chain line is fine. Anyway that might be something to look at.

that may be worth looking into. i keep my drivetrain sparkling clean, but perhaps there are some burrs to contend with. i shall certainly check that out.

thank you, everyone, for your input. especially the stuff about making my bicycle more floridly garrish. =P

I'm a bad man. I don't replace things until they break, something's obviously wrong, or I'm bored.
