BMX - chain play

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
First time with 25/9 gearing -- how much play should I be aiming for in the chain?
I'm finding it hits the chain stay when I land if I set to what I'm used to, but it concerns me that setting it much tighter is gonna wear those tiny little sprockets out super fast.

Well, destroyed chain stays vs. worn down sprocket. What would you rather have.

I'd keep it kinda loose and buy a lizard skin for the stays.

no, keep it nice and snug, not overtight though.

You should be able to move the chain up (with your fingers) about half an inch or so
is that half an inch each way (so an inch of movement in total), or half an inch movement in total (so a quarter inch each way)?

no more then a half inch, id say even snugger. You want the cranks to spin nice and easy but the chain not lose.

that's what I meant by kinda loose. do you have those little wheel supports that go at the back of the stays? if you do, keep it about that tight, maybe a little tighter if you don't
