I'm having some problems.

I cycle about 4-5000 miles a year and have recently started to get pains in my upper legs. I've done about 1500 miles since the New Year and in the last couple of weeks have been noticing a pressure feeling at the back of my legs just under the buttocks.

It's giving me feeling like a "dead leg" and seems to emanate from my hamstrings.

My saddle and riding position have not been changed since I rebuilt my commuter/tourer 5500 miles ago. And my riding position has been same all my adult life.

I thought it might be my shorts, as the liner is very compressed now (I wash them out every night for commuting and keep better pairs for weekends and tours) so I've changed to a more healthily padded T Mobile pair (go Jan!), but pain still there.

My saddle is (I'm embarrassed to say) an old foam covered Viscount which I've used for the last 15 years or so (if it's comfy don't change it).

I'm wondering if maybe it has reached the end of it's days and certainly the pain I get seems to be from the area of my leg which contacts the rear part of the saddle where it flares out.

Anyone agree this is the likely cause? Or any other suggestions. I was thinking I might try a Brooks again (last had one 20 years ago)

The only thing I've changed on the bike is to convert to full ergo and did that over the Christmas break.

My husband had the same problem and they said it was his Sacroiliac(sp) or SI joint disfunction. They gave him some excercise to help out, but his always comes back...

I've noticed a similar pain since I lowered my seat. I'm in the process of finding the right height as I discovered my old "tried and true" was 3.5 cm higher than the experts formulas were telling me it should be.

The good news is that I feel stronger with a lower seat. The bad news new is that I get these pains similar to yours and it takes an extra day for them to recover.

The experiment continues...

Even if the saddle was comfy, there is a possiblity that your body has changed a bit in the last few years, and that may be causing a problem, I only seem to get about 3 years to a saddle before it goes "off" but your older saddle may be better made. Hold though-- "Full Ergo", Different body position while riding the bike!! Different weight distribution on the saddle!! Could be you have answered your problem yourself. Go back to what you had before and see if it improves. Finally, See a sports physio. They may not be cheap but they do understand sports problems, and may be able to tweak the part of the body that is causing the problem.
