i did. you will need a helmet. you can take it off while posing during the coffee stop :-).

i ride without helmet on quiet back roads if ride by myself. i'm willing to accept the choice of the group. you will have the same issue with the other large cycling club NYCC and i assume with the smaller ones too.

just wear the helmet or you will be limited to play fixie-polo with the hipsters in williamsburg :-)

For the record, nyc bike polo is played in Chinatown :P

And to the op, you are entitled to ride anywhere in NYC solo without a helmet. The second you set out on a 5BBC or any other group ride, you must follow their rules. If that bugs you so much, follow their cue sheets and ride alone.

New York City doesn't require a helmet for adults but some of the places, like Palisades Interstate Park and Rockland County, where 5BBC rides do require one. It's always easier to simply wear a helmet than worry about local laws for each park or county you may ride through.

On a side note, I was walking my bike through Union Square on election night and some overexcited (and probably very drunk) voter bumped heads with me. I just happened to be wearing my helmet. She wasn't as lucky and probably felt it the next morning.

If Helmets Cramp your style try walking instead without shoes.

I was doored Tuesday night By an unmarked undercover NYPD SUV. I was in the right he was in the wrong.
Wore a helmet, bounced head first off the door. I'm alive, no busted open head. I'm glad I'm a boring
helmet wearer. Yes I have other wounds, but I'll get better (can't discus because of legal isuues)

Listen, it took amny years for football players to wear face masks and hard shelled helmets.
It took longer for hockey players to wear helmets, then face shields.
It took Skiers even longer to understand the positive aspect of helmets.

Okay, I understand helmets seem a bit goofy. But come on be good to yourself and your family wear one.
Why should anyone have to feed you with a spoon as your food drools down your chin in a rehab center.

Just my two cents.

injuries increased in football with the use of hardshell helmets. it totally changed the way the line hit each other. much more aggressive now
