Bicycle Mechanics - Can I swap rings on a compact crankset WITHOUT pulling the crank arms?

I'd like to swap rings on a Cannondale Hollowgram (alloy) compact crank and was wondering if I can do this without pulling the crankarm. This crankset requires a special tool that I don't have, which is why I'm asking.

All depends on how nimble your fingers are. You can, but it's much easier if you take it off.

Is this for the want of a $10 tool?

id go out and buy a crank arm puller. even if you don't need it now, chances are someday you will. besides, its just a good tool for a bike owner to have.

The Hollowgram crank has an additionl tool needed that's ~$80 and the nearest C'dale LBS is an hour away. I'd like to get the tools one day, but it's nice to know I don't need them at the moment ;)
