Road Cycling - Bought my first road bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I am a mtb rider moving to the road and just brought home my first bike. It's the new carbon frame Roubaix from Specialized. It's full ultegra with up graded wheel set to ksyrium ssc sl and FSA carbon cranks. I'm not real sure how a road bike is supposed to ride, but this thing is smooth and fast. I am riding with the local hammerhead group tomorrow and will probably get my *ss handed to me. It will be fun anyway.

Nice bike. I am a recent convert to the road. Just couple bits of advice from things that I noticed when I switched over.
First of all, you probably will get smoked. Don't worry about it, you have to get used to the bike. I have seen roadies get a new bike and be slow for a couple rides. Your hands may get sore pretty quickly. Then the new saddle will start to growl at you. These will take a few rides.
The big one. Don't get in the middle of the pack. This bike will handle quite a bit differently than your MTB. It may seem very twitchey, especialy when changing hand positions. You don't want to take anyone out. Stay at the back and leave more room than normal in the draft. The brakes are not where your instincts tell you they are. You may also shift the wrong way a time or two and you don't want someone running over you because you suddenly slowed.
Have fun.

Staying in the back sounds like good advice, and timely. I am out the door right now for the ride. I will let you know how it went. thx

Ok so I did my first ride with the local racer group and it went pretty well (I thought) for a mtb guy. There were about 20 in the group and it started out slow 18 -23 mph for the first 10 miles. Then at some point only known to them, they stepped it up a notch and we were making 25 - 32. The wind was really blowing, like over 15 maybe closer to 20 with some light rain mixed in. After about 40 miles at another point only known to them, the all out sprinting started. It caught be by total supprise, so I really had to bust a hump to stay with the leaders. I was able to stay with the first 5 guys. The total ride was around 50 miles. For my first group ride, and second time ever on a road bike (first time was Wed. when I bought the bike), I thougt it was fun.

That is the crank set it comes with it, and the standard wheel set is the equipe (sp?). If you get the dura-ace group, you get the dura-ace crank set instead.

Oh,so you got the comp,it comes in two carbon models and two columbus models. Thats the one i was comparing to the 5200 and the TCR1. I saw it at supergo for 2299 or 2399.

I was doing exactly what you are, comparing the Roubaix Comp to the Trek 5200. I don't know squat about how a road bike should ride, but there was no question that the Roubaix felt better than the 5200 in my mind.
