I got my hands on my dad's old 1988 Bridgestone 300. It's a really nice looking bike that I was going to use as a commuter. Right now it's got a 6-speed with those old friction shifters on the downtube. I was considering switching these out to 105 or Ultegra. Is it even possible to do this? Is my best bet using original parts? The wheels have got to go (schraeder valves and old old tires) and the seat so I was thinking of buying some used components. If anyone knows much about these old things let me know.

anything is possible, but you will need to get your hands on some parts. Try craigslist or ebay. the spacing for the rear wheel is likely not going to fit a 8 or 9 speed wheel, you can have the frame spread at a LBS. shifter, wheels and drivetrain will be the most expensive. ride it for awhile and change out the parts when you can find them.
you won'y be able to fit 8/9/10 spd hubs on the rear but 7s hubs will still fit. of course you can have it widened as mr. fog said..
upgrading is always a good thing.. but just think about it.. you're going to spend $650+ (US) for your new gruppo.. about a couple of hundred on the new wheels.. Don't you think a frame should go with it? ;) (just a thought..)

Without having any frame modifications done, you could install a set of wheels with a 7 speed cassette and the crankset of your choice. 7 speed Sora shifters are still on avaible for either a double or triple crankset, just get the correct rear der. to go with your crankset.

Are you up to selling the Bridgestone 300? I would be willing to buy it if you can give me more info. Size, condition etc... Possible sending me pics. I recently had my 300 stolen and would like to get a replacement that is close to the one I had. I had a 1986.
Thanks,
Todd
