I put the red cover of my old cateye three led blinkie over my P7. It seems to blink/shine red (a white center spot but red nonetheless.
Any ideas how to cut the plastic cover to fit in the head of my P7 flashlight?
What glue would you use to keep it in?
Seems like it could be a cheaper alternative to the DINOTTE and would use the same battery.
Is this a stupid idea?
bright is good, but there is such a thing as over kill.
side visibility is a good thing, put a diffuser on the head to spill the 500~600 lumens sideways.

It's sort of silly. A lot of engineering went into making the led put off a wide spectrum and then you filter out most of it. So you're probably looking at something like a 70% drop in output. Why not use a red led?

Not a good idea, filtering white light into red doesn't work well, at all. It cost $20 to make a Dinotte, and all the items are available at DX.

Nobody has come up with a single 4 die LED for the red spectrum. Put any red led on the market right now into this flashlight and you will kill the LED and driver. OTOH, you can wire two Luxeon III in parallel to imitate the 400L taillight, Lux III has 1400mAh max current output.
Actually having watch some comparison videos the red blinkies with a white high powered center led they do seem to stand out way more but you are the only one who can judge how good it is in person.
If you already have the bits I would be tempeted to go with it.

Which I can tell you, it isn't worth your time and money.
I made something similar, it's not a Dinotte but it's pretty close, and more versatile.

Thanks everybody. Helpful advice. I have no background in EE and have less skill in any mechanical work.
Almost anything I do (DIY) turns to sh&t...........This plus the helpful advice that it isn't such a good idea leads me to not take on this project. Seemed so easy (maybe a hint that it really isn't :-)).......I have three blinkies now but am feeling ever increasingly more vulnerable in my commutes. Probably as a result of my own sense of mortality and also a good friend got slammed by a car.
I have a good friend who commutes and has a Dinotte rear red light and says it is amazing.
Oh well, I will think about either a PB blinkie or laying down the cash for a Dinotte............
