i know they are two different kind of bike. my questions is... do you think the rockhopper frame will be stronger and lighter than the sirrus? i mean since if i were to get the rockhopper, i'll probably get a set of tires (slicks) for commute. however, will the sirrus be able to do some trailing???

Stronger, but not lighter.
The Sirrus is really what a "hybrid" should have been, all along.
I ride trails using 700cx28mm rubber. The Sirus can take wider rubber, but the 28 is a good all-round size for commuters.
You can't just blow down a steep trail, but you need to pick your way and ride responsively. It is fairly similar to a cyclo-cross bike in style.
You get a good carbon fork version, that is compatable with proper fenders.
