Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. thew yesterday I was searching for spinerval reviews and came across one of Coach Troy's workouts, that someone has posted

anyway I was trying to follow the program posted but found the gearing was spiking my heart rate out of my proper zone

I take it the most important factor in these workouts for base building at least is staying in your zone the majority of the time so I adjusted my gears and cadence accordingly

do I have the correct understanding?

Yup.

If you are just base building, crank up a favorite old movie, get in the Zone,
and watch the show.

I find that recovery and strength training on the trainer work well enough...especially recovery...but doing base miles longer than 2 hours no matter what the movie I'm mentally toast. Still, when the weather or lack of light keeps me indoors...out to the garage I go. Makes spring all the sweeter.

I must be a true glutton for punishment. I got the Spinervals "Hardcore 100" DVDs a couple of years ago. When I'm doing base, I do as much of it as I need to (2, 3, 4, even 5 hours) but I don't go as hard as the folks on the video. I do the same intervals, but keep my HR in a better base zone by using an easier gear.

It helps me to have a structured workout rather than watching movies for a few hours.
