Texas - Good place to ride in the south/southeast area of Houston?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I'll be visiting my daughter in Houston this winter. I'm looking for a good/safe place to go for 45-60 minute rides. I'll be in the staying in the Park Place/Allendale area of Houston. Where's the closest place to ride on bike paths or ?? from there?
We're considering spending time in the Houston during the winters.
Thanks, Lee

We have a group that rides six days each week in Galveston and Brazoria Country Roads.
Starting at 9 AM in League City. Some go for 50 miles, some 65 miles, me 85 miles.
The roads are flat and we never leave anyone.
You are welcome anytime.
We can handle any bike problems and have a Sag for back up.

I hope you get in some good riding while you're here. I would suggest putting in at MacGregor Park and riding the Bayou trail. You can get in about 30 miles and never leave the trail (except for about a mile where they are doing construction and you need to ride the road).
This is a good link to keep handy. http://www.publicworks.houstontx.gov/bikeways/maps.htm
Specific to the ride I mentioned above, go here and see cell P10 for the starting point. http://www.publicworks.houstontx.gov/bikeways/docs/bikeways_map_network.pdf
If you want something organized, the closest club I know of is here, but there may be others: http://www.pearlandcyclingclub.org/Mambo/index.php
And just to be sure I've linked you to death, here is my favorite cycling resource for Texas: http://www.bicycletexas.com/houston.htm

kwrides, Thanks. The park/bayou ride was the kind of thing I had in mind.
10 wheels, Thanks. I'll keep your offer in mind long term.
We'll probably make a couple of short visits this winter. Then we'll consider staying for longer periods of time in the coming winters and spend time with the kids and grandkids (coming). As much as I love living in Oregon it's always nice to get away for awhile in the winter for some warm weather.

There's a good road ride in Tom Bass Park (Hwy 288 and Beltway 8) on most Saturday mornings. There are several lengths to consider as well: 28, 50 and 63 mile tracks keep in interesting. Of course, once you get to 1462 you can pretty much go as far east or west that you want.
Here's a link to this ride http://www.teamwestu.org/wuwu_ssi_map.asp. I stole this map from an organized ride last winter, but you get the idea.
There's a lot less traffic out here than in Hermann Park. It's flat and definitely not as challenging as those Central Texas hills, but on occasion the wind gusts can make this ride more fun :thumb:.
Happy Riding!

cferrell - How is the 521 part of this ride? I used to live in Fresno near 521 and 6. I would commute in on 521, and it seemed like a pretty high traffic road. I haven't been there in a long time, so I'm wondering if the perspective is different on a bike.

The traffic on 521 can be busy at times, but I normally hit this part of the ride by 9:30-10 am on Sat and Sun mornings so traffic has never been an issue for me. I can imagine this would not be the best ride for weeknights.
