I might have messed my back wheel up, have been trying to sort it out for last few hours and wonder if its a write off, would be grateful for any advice. The problem is turning the pedals no longer turns the wheel, just makes a sort off worling noise, also if the wheel goes around and the pedals aren't being turned the chain trys to come off. cheers for any help.

A little more information or a picture might help. Is your bike equipped with a freewheel, or a more modern free-hub? If the rear cogset is turning when you pedal and not transmitting power to the wheel, then the pawls that engage the hub are likely shot.

Sounds like the pawls aren't catching... Grease probably hardened up inside the freewheel/freehub. Spray some WD40 into the gap between the outer spinning part of the freewheel and inner stationary part. Spin it into the freewheel really good to clean out the old grease and gunk. Then drop some heavy oil in and you should be set.
