Don't know except that it is a priveleged only crowd. I do a similiar ride with afew friends in mid may that tops off the mountain with a beautiful ride back down. It is a metric century that starts at the folk art center to the top and back. It is growing now we expect 10 people this year ;) the beauty of it is, you climb the whole way up and then turn around and it is the longest most gracefull ride back down.

are you doing 'Mountains of Misery'? Thats a hell of a ride! I am gonna do that one this year, never done it befor. btw it is still not so big that you can get in on it and hopefully it will stay that way...

I rode Mitchell last year. It will kick your butt if you're not ready for it. It started raining and the temperature dropped to the lower 40s before I got to the top. The last 2.5 miles are a beyond category climb and it's nasty, especially since you are tired by that point.

If you don't have a ticket it may be difficult to get in but, if you're patient, posting a message looking for a ticket will usually do it. The organizers keep a list of previous riders and you are in if you have been to the top before. A lot of people selling their ticket will ask you to ride under their name so they won't lose their spot. Last year I had at least ten offers to sell a ticket to me once May came around. I have a message posted looking for a ticket this year, but so far I haven't been able to find one. One of my buddies just found a ticket last night.

Good luck!

You need the ticket/registration only if you're doing the full century, ending at the summit. The first 72 miles, known as "the Assault on [the town of] Marion", has no limit on the number of riders. And once you've done the Assault on Marion, you can then apply to do Mitchell the following year (on a first-come, first-served basis).
My cycling club's challenge team is doing the Marion-to-Mitchell leg as its training ride this Saturday (24 April). You're welcome to join us! Send me a private message for details.
