It seems that now when compared to when i got my bike..i need more to apply more pressure to get the bike to stop quicker. i got shimnao hydro brakes. Could it be the brake pads that need to be replaced or does the brake levers need adjustment?

Check your pads, right away. It is easy to do. Just take the wheel out and use a flashlight to look at the pad. Compare the pad thickness to a new pad. If it is getting real close to the back plate replace it. If you have plenty of material, take out the pad (either by removing the retaining screw or pin) and clean it off on a big piece of cardboard by rubbing it against it. Then clean off the rotor with some rubbing alcohol.
The other issue could be air in the system, if your brake is firm but has no power then the above should fix it, if the lever is spongy then you need to bleed the system. This usually does not happen unless you break the system somewhere however.
