Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - chain length when using rear derailleur as chain tensioner on single-speed...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I want to run fairly wide tires on my road bike single-speed conversion. Unfortunately, this means that I have to run the axle pretty much all the way to the back of the forward-facing dropouts for frame clearance. And, again unfortunately, this position doesn't work very well for the gearing I want to run chain length-wise (ie. it's too slack). So...

If I were to use a rear derailleur (which I already have) as a chain tensioner on this single-speed bike, what would be the best (most efficient) chain length to use?

Should I adjust chain length so that the two derailleur pulleys are directly over one-another or ???

Thanks.

Steve

id say adjust the length so that the derailleurs are stretched pretty tight, but not too tight that they could bounce and hit the chain stay.

no, adjust it tight (but not too tight) so that the two pulleys are almost but not quite parallel.
