Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi there i'm new here and just bought a bike labelled cumberland. It's nice and light and nice to ride so far. I googled the name and nothing really came up as a brand name. Has anyone ever heard of this type of racing bike?????
Cheers

Hi
Is it an older bike, say 90s or early? If yes, you might find it worthwhile asking in the Retro forum at Bicycles Network Australia (http://bicycles.net.au/forums/viewforum.php?f=23&sid=cfdae14eb2c8c41ccf3dfae5be3df203).

Hi Besty
There was a bike shop in Adelaide called Cumberland Cycles. I think they made there own frames under the name Cumberland. I looked at this link http://www.cumberlandcycles.com.au/aboutus.htm and didn't see any reference to there racing machines. It looks like they just sell bikes. It was probably the guy that ran the shop made his own frames. As did 'International Cycles' of Semaphore. I can't remember his name. I used to buy accessories from him. Also Ron Backshall did the same thing. He was out at Payneham. But certainly in the 70's they sold bikes with 'Cumberland' stickers on the frame. Like most of these shops they were probably inherited by siblings or small business people who didn't have the skills to make the frames and it became too hard. I personally bought a beautiful bike from Gordon 'Pud' Brooks from Pt. Adelaide, who is still riding I believe, and his frames were called 'Macini'. I think Italian names improved the chances of a sale.
Hope that helps
cheers
Ricky.
