Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Large Road Shoe

I have checked out the stickies and really didn't find my answer. I have a size 14 shoe and need to buy road shoes for cliplless look style pedals. Anyone have large feet that can reccomend a decent shoe under $100.00. I have normal width feet, problem is most lbs don't carry that size, i tried on shimano 48's and they seemed a bit snug.

I have found Sidi's to be a bit wider than the Pearl Izumi and the Shimano's that I tried. I don't know about finding size 14, because I had to order my 12's online, because the bike stores didn't carry my size of the sidi in the style I wanted and told me it would take 14 - 20 days to get them. I went to 5 different LBS's in the Omaha area and only one had one size 12 available. They told me they rarely sell that large of a bike shoe, so they don't stock them. I hope you have better luck./

I bought my Pearl Izumi at first, because that is what the LBS had, and I thought they would be OK. Too tight and cause foot problems. I still haven't been able to sell them. They are $150.00 shoes with very, very little use and can't sell them for $50.00

You can look online, or check the size charts and ask your LBS to order some in the proper size..... A 14 is a very large shoe, so an LBS probably sells less then a pair a year, with something that they sell that rarely it doesn't make sense to keep them in stock, not when a supplier can ship something across the country in less then a week.

Yeah, but the LBS employee was about 5'4" and 125 lbs. And he was the bigger of the two working.

the size 48 shimano kayak was a little snug, I think a 49 should suit my needs. I'll just have to have them ordered at my LBS. They are hard to find online, and now the store I where I purchased my bike gives me 10% off all purchases. I think I'll be able to get a nice pair for about 80 bucks.

They also sell specialized road shoes, but nothing i could try on in the store.

I too have feet that are size 13 to 14 (depends on the shoe brand). Gave up and still ride with the old "rat-traps-with-straps" setup and any type of comfy shoe I can find in my size - running shoes, skateboard shoes, hiking shoes.

Whatever get you out there with the pedals turning and the wheels rolling. :thumb:

I can imagine your pain, guys. The market produces for the middle of the bell shape and you just fall through the cracks.

i don't know if i should just buy a pair online that should be my size and hope they feel decent. I have found some on sale at nashbar for 44.99 and they are my size. the brand is exustar, don't know much about the brand but with a coupon for 10% off it may be a good starting point?

I wouldn't, unless you know that you can exchange them with no questions asked. You might spend more time and money with shipping back and forth. Each shoe brand is made differently, but that is a pretty cheap price for a test run.

No, but it depends, if you go to the LBS and say I want this, and I want it tomorrow, and the LBS is going to have to pay extra for express shipping, they may ask you to pay the extra cost. However if the LBS places their regular order on Thursday, for delivery a week later, and they add your order to the regular order, then it's not unreasonable for the LBS to cover the shipping cost.

14??? Try walking into your LBS and asking for a 17...... at least the internet makes it easier to find "regular" shoes.

i actually find a lot of 16's on clearance when i look for shoes, but usually no 17's that is damn big

I bought a pair of sz 50 Sidi's for about $50 that fit well and I wear a 14 or 15 depending on the shoe. I actually picked them up on clearance at a local bike shop. They were probably trying to get rid of them because of the odd size. Just keep looking. I think Lake also makes a big shoe.

You might want to check at Performance. They have some shoes that are available in up to 48 WIDE. For me, all of the 48s at the Performance store were long enough, but not wide enough, so I ordered a pair of the wide models. I'm going to pick them up in Portland tomorrow.

I'm a mere 13. I use Specialize size 48's. I tried on larger ones but 48 fit me. Front (ball) of my foot is EEE & D by the heel. Wish my street shoes were as comfortable as these.

Thank you for the link, while I am leaning more toward a mtb style this pointed me in a good direction to find what I was looking for. I want to be able to walk normal off the bike due to my bad knee and back issues and the road shoes appear to not allow that. While walking like a duck might be no biggie for some its highly risky for me. Anyways great discussion.
