I'm thinking this belongs in this thread...
I've got a buddy that can cut metal with a water jet and I'm thinking about trying to employ him to help me make a custom chainring! I just feel a little under-educated on the specs (i.e. what metal is best, etc.).
I am going for 48t, but was curious if anybody else has done something like this. Any notes?

If you have the math and geometry skills to get the teeth all 'exactly even' ?why not? That would be my notes. If the teeth are not even, chain wear would be a ?problem?...

Here is a set of templates for making sprockets with limited tools:

There is a 48T pattern in there.
There is also a template somewhere on the web for customized tooth counts.
