The tires are more than twice the price of this really nice 96 GT Bravado I just bought. Bought the Nokian Freddie Revenz Lite's today and did a first ride on fireroads tonight. First impression is very good. Part of my 30 mile loop is on tarmac and it went quite well considering the width of the tires. On ice they are probably not the best studded tires around but they seemed to work very well for my kind of riding. I think they will really shine when the snow starts falling agaain. The bike is in very good condition and although the tires are pricey, 300$ for the whole package is quite OK.

Nice bike. I see yours uses downtube shift cables instead of the channel on the underside of the toptube like my old Bravado LE used (it was not a good feature, caused cable drag).
How much pressure are you running in those tires?

The guy at the LBS recommended 25-28 pounds and that seemed OK.

Wish they'd make em in 29er size. I have a 26er version of the Extreme 296 and they are just too skinny.
