Woah,
My ~1998 Cannondale CAAD3 R1000 project bike is about to be reborn! I've held onto this 58 cm frame all this time and still never finished it. I almost built it up once with Dura Ace 9 speed triple 7703 group but I backed out when I realized my frame was already "obsolete", so I took that project in a different direction with the more modern but utilitarian sloping top tube Flyte SRS-3 that is still a work in progress itself.
I bought the bare frame from a Cannondale dealer for 375$ and even made payments. It had no headset and the 1" threaded carbon fork was not OEM. The color is a cool gloss black, metallic grey to gloss white fade back at the rear dropouts. Every component has been sought out over long periods of time. I'm not bragging, more like bracing myself for the OMG! type remarks I'll get when I post some pics. You see, this dude is evolving as a bit of a pimp my ride type caricature clad in whitewalls (reflectorized Conti GP 4000's) and gloss white sidepulls. The front rim is a DT Swiss aero profile while (accidentally) the rear rim is a more normal profile (DT Swiss RR 1.1), both in silver. I had asked my LBS mechanic to build the rear in an RR 1.2 but there was a miscommunication. He does such quality work, I told him don't worry about it.
To make my experiment even riskier, this bike is being built up with a NOS Suntour Accushift drivetrain. Suntour SL brazed on downtube levers, Suntour Superbe Pro 8 speed cassette hub in the rear with a mongrel 7 + 1 improvised 8 speed AP1 cassette in 12-26 size. The rear derailleur with be XC Pro mid-cage or short-cage. For the crank I've rigged up a Dura Ace 7410 that had the anodizing stripped, then underwent aluminum polishing. For the chainrings I'm using SunTour Superbe 53/39. The front derailleur needs to be 31.8mm, maybe Ultegra or maybe Suntour.
The stem is Cinelli alter with a Cinelli quill adapter. The handlebars are Cinelli silver nerve handlebars that are 44cm ctr to ctr with 26.0 clamp diameter. I bought this of ebay from none other than Jaques Boyer, the first American to ride the Tour de France if I'm not mistaken. The Silver alloy threaded headset is a cartridge bearing Tom Ritchey that just happens to look near identical to 6500 Ultegra. The seatpost is a black anodized period Syncros, the saddle a quirky cyclocross San Marco Pirelli Attive.
Anyway, I just had to share my update about the creation. This funky rendition wants to live . I will post pictures soon.
