So, I was thinking yesterday...

I've got this ratty pair of bluejeans, and my girlfriend's bike (well, the one I'm building for her) has a crappy handlebar (North Road) and seat... However, the seat itself is INSANELY comfy. Here's my thinking...

Take strips of denim and wrap the handlebars (just the places where normal grips would go), then coat it with something (shellac?) to keep it from falling apart or moving around.

Then, get lots of foam padding and stuff it under the denim and glue it up all around the corners.

What do you think? Would shellac or varnish work OK for this, or would there be something else better? Scrap the whole idea completely?

BTW, it's an unknown Western Flyer (I'm guessing) three speed, desperately in need of at least a rear wheel/hub. Painted it semi-gloss black with maroon fenders, and I'm using antique white to offset flames on the backs of both fenders. Fun stuff.

Strap a case of Bud on the back and you'll be ready to ride it to the nearest NASCAR race.

yeah yeah. Well, the Naugahyde that I could find was stiff as a board, and I can't afford leather. Any other ideas?

The first thing that comes to mind: AMC Gremlin, Levi's Edition.

I'm just saying...

It wasn't my first car, but my first new car was a 1972 Gremlin X. I had 5 years of great fun with that car.

For grips, I've used leather cut from an ancient backpack I owned. I coated it with 3 coats of shellac to tamp down the rough edge. There's plenty of leather goods at thrift stores waiting for such repurposing.

Sounds like a cool idea. Didnt I see leather rifle slings used as bar wrap in a recent thread?

Sears made a Free Spirit with a denim seat, sometime around the bicentennial.

I always wondered if leather steering wheel wrap would work?
