which is better? which is more in keeping with a CV
style? The polished Phil hubs are really nice and not nearly
as expensive as his fw hubs.

Why is a casette better than a FW?

I read Sheldon on it, maybe I am dense but I don't totally
get the evolution from fw to casette yet.

Freewheel hubs tend to bend/break axles, but I can't say that I've heard of that happening to a Phil hub. I never liked the look of the old Phil hubs with the steel center section that always rusts, but the new ones are beautiful. Bear in mind that you are limited to no more than 8 speeds with a freewheel.
