Southern California - Advice on SART ride?

Hey, so the next folding bike ride will be on dec 14, in the SART. However, the details aren't fully set yet because I'm not familiar with that trail. Where would be a good place to meet up to start the ride, and have lunch after the ride? Also, is there public transportation (train station, bus stops) somewhere near where we can enter the SART?

Which direction are you going, towards the beach or away from it? How far do you want to ride?

My vote for place to start would be Yorba Linda Regional Park. Lots of parking, even over-flow parking on the dirt when the paved bits are all used up.

But I sold my folding bike and haven't gotten another one yet, so don't know if I'll be there. If I do ride, it will be on my fixed gear bike.

Need more info...the SART is over 30 miles in length.

So it would be 44 round trip, but very little elevation gain, i.e. mostly flat except for the down/up when going under cross streets.

You're right too, that it would be easy to turn around for anyone who was feeling tired or not quite up to it at any point. Plus, it would be (just about) impossible to get lost!

Are there any places we could stop and eat (or maybe a coffee shop?) near where the SART hits the beach? That might be a good place to try each other's bikes, talk about folding bikes and congregate in general. There's Huntington Beach Pier, but that would add maybe a mile or not quite.

Any ideas on that subject?

Anaheim (http://maps.google.com/maps?rls=com.microsoft:*:IE-SearchBox&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=ie7&rlz=1I7GWYE&um=1&q=amtrak+station+anaheim&fb=1&cid=0,0,8275941011186055898&sa=X&oi=local_result&resnum=1&ct=image) is the closest Amtrak/Metrolink stop. Head south across the stadium parking lot, go left on Orangewood (east) then about 1/4 mile turn right onto the trail just before the bridge over the river. As I recall, it's about 13 miles from there to the beach.

At the end of the SART at PCH, the Huntington Beach pier is a good 3.15 miles. This might be a bit too far. That would add 6 miles to the already 44 miles round trip.

Temperature this weekend is supposed to be hot but at PCH it should be ok, maybe on the windy side. Too bad there isn't a thing like a cyclist Roach wagon. The food concessions on the beach path aren't really that good.

Yes, it's between 12 and 13 miles to the beach from the Rampart St entry, south of the stadium near the fire-training facility. Parking there, too, but be careful you don't park on the Orange end of the block because that's No Parking. (Anaheim and Orange don't pave at the same time, and there's an obvious difference at the city line.) The Amtrak station will add about 1/2 mile each way from the station to the trail entry and back to the station, or maybe a teensy bit less.

There are places to eat at Katella just east of the trail in that center on the north side. Not sure about the bike parking, though I can recommend The Lazy Dog.

Also, this late in the year it's likely only a couple of the beach concession stands will be open.

Hmm...yorba linda, or anaheim? Anaheim would be the shorter route, which is probably better for beginning riders. But yorba linda has parking... *ponder ponder*

Orangewood and Rampart (A Stadium) would be 25 miles roundtrip.
Yorba Park is 42 miles roundtrip.

Have the LD folding riders start at Imperial then join the SD riders at the training firestation near A Stadium (Rampart/Orangewood/57 FWY):thumb:

I believe the pier is only 2 miles from the SART entrance to Huntington Beach (South end where we hang). Which means and added 4 miles.:p

Parking near Anaheim Stadium:...Southside of the facility, is Rampart and Orangewood (EZ access from the 57 fwy). Head 100 yards south on Rampart you will find the firestation training center and plenty of office buildings used by SEVERAL cyclists that use the SART.

Very few riders use the parkinglots. They are sometimes patrolled by security guards. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing!:p

I park on the street cause the lots can be used during A Stadium events with a parking fee. I'd hate to return to find my truck had been towed due to an event so I don't bother and use the street.

I've always parked on the lil sidestreets, second one from Orangewood next to the office building.
If you look at teh cars directly behind the guys att eh Leaky Faucet, they are parked on Rampart. Further behind is a grey car parked on the sidestreet where we park. I do't know the name of the street.:p

Ok, so my doc said no hard biking for me for quite a while because it aggravates my spinal injuries (was in car accident last weekend). Well, they should have told me that right when I went to see them the first time I went to see them, as I bike commuted this week and the doc scolded me for making it worse, gaaah. :cry:

That means no biking for me for at least a week, then not too much for the next couple of weeks. I guess the official ride will have to take the shorter route from anaheim stadium.

Update update! I added an optional train ride from union to anaheim station. If you wanna take the train, be at union station at 8:30am or earlier. We'll take the metrolink 654 that leaves at 8:45 and gets at anaheim stn at 9:30am. It's a super short ride from anaheim stn to the meeting place.

If you're not taking the train, be at the parking lot near anaheim stadium orangewood entrance at 9:30am, and we'll roll off from there to the rampart SART entrance at 10. There is street parking on the sidestreets off rampart and there are several office building parking lots that people use. Parking is also available at the metrolink station. From there bike 15mi to huntington pier, lunch there, then back again. For those taking the train, return trip is on the 3:15 metrolink 657 from anaheim stn to union stn.
