FWIW many very old people grew up riding fixed gear. Many "Safety Bikes" were fixed.

Um, no. Wayne Newton's generation didn't grow up with fixed geared bikes as any kind of norm. He's only three years older than Eddy Merckx. To have grown up riding fixed gear as a normal childhood bicycle, somebody would have to be over the age of one hundred. By 1902, the freewheeled three speed was available. By the 1930's, balloon tired cruisers/townies,newsboys were the norm.
