I'm 5'8

The dude at the local bike shop tried to sell me a 56 (it was the only s/s at the store) and said it would be fine if I lower the seat a little bit.

I think that is probably to big for me. Does anyone know what size bike I should look into getting?

Sizes vary with manufacturers. My rule of thumb is to avoid bikes I can't clear by at least 1" in the top tube.

Does it feel like the bike is too tall or that the bike is too long? I was told by my bike mechanic that 1"-2" in of clearence from the top tube to the family jewels is good. I think I have about 1.5" of clearence on my road bike now. If it feels like you're reaching too far, you might be able to play around with the stem length. That's all I got.

edit: I'm 5'7" and I ride comfortably on a 17"-19" frame or a 49-52 cm frame usually (depending on brand and model)
