Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

What would you suggest for a strong headlamp? I need to get a much stronger headlamp for my Electra Townie. My eyesight is not good in the dark, and I need to be able to see the road better, especially to keep an eye out for pot holes. The roads and sidewalks in our area are very bad ....

I just ordered a couple Dinottes... expensive, but I hear they are worth every penny... as the days get shorter I find I can't wait for them to get here... so many drivers don't see me with my reflectors, reflective clothes, three flashies.... maybe this'll help (then again many see me but pretend not to, I suppose).
And of course, being able to see on the short stretch of MUP I ride through G. Ross Lord when it's dark out will be a bonus too!

those lights look sweet, the only issue would be battery usage being high.
Im looking some LED or bright bulbs that can be powered from dynmo generator so I wont need to rely on battries.

Does your Townie have a dynamo hub?
If so, Lumotec IQ Fly:

Add a taillight while you're at it. I'd also suggest getting them both with the standlight function so that you're still lit while waiting at intersections.

A 3.3 Ahr battery (readily available at Radio Shack for $20) will last 2 hours and some change with a 20 W bulb at 14.4 V. A 4.5 Ahr battery pushes the run time up over 3 hours. Both are enough for my morning and evening commute (a little less then 2 hours round trip). I have 10W bulbs that can push my 4.5 Ahr battery to over 6 hours (with about half the light) if I want.
One of the advantages of the battery system is more flexibility in that I can swap it from bike to bike. A dynamo system would require different wheels for each bike. I could use one 700C for my commuter and touring bike but I'd need two different wheels from my mountain bike (1 disc and 1 not).
Batteries might require more care and feeding but the flexibility and output make them worth it for me.

Do some research on the Dog Mushing sites. Their lights fit either on a headband or a hat or helmet. Generally the battery pack can be worn on your waist or fastened to the handle bars. Really do a great job and are very durable.

I commute a lot at night, and needed a light that would let ME see the road, and not just be seen by others... I settled for a cygolite rover II led XTRA (http://tripxamerica.com/?p=165) . it dosen't break the bank and it puts out about 255 lumens or 25 halogen watts.... it is bright....
