Southern California - Anyone going up GMR tomorrow AM?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was thinking about going up to the maintenance shack. Probably going to start around 7:30 or 8. Kind of depends on who might want to go and what time works for them.
Last time I was up there a couple months ago I was knocking it out from the first sharp left turn to the shed in about 45. That's what...maybe 50 minutes from the gate??? Probably can add a few minutes on that since I haven't done it recently.

I rode it today, so I'll pass on tomorrow. I rode from Boulder Springs to The Village and back. My time to The Village was 2:33 so pretty slow for me, but (only excuse) there was a lot of wind!
Otherwise, no problem, lots of cyclists I knew up there including Brandy DeLuca, Vance Mac, Rene and Clem Bartoli and Patrick Huber. Lots I didn't know too . . .

Aw Dude! You should be way faster than that! Maybe 30'ish!:thumb:....When I was practicing for The Bear, I was doing from the gate to the top (1/8 mile past the shed where it levels out) in 56 minutes, And I know you can drop my arse!:D
A while back I checked the results on the SCVelo TT. I think the winner was about 30 and the last guy was about 42. There were a couple of guys from Mexico that finished in :58 (?) so I guess it runs in my genes to be a slow climber:roflmao2:
Best gate to the village gate is 2:06. But everytime I ride it, that darn OCRick Dude beats me!!
You guys are killing me....then I found this in the manual for my new Mavic/WinTech Alti:
"For your information, a professional cyclist extremely well prepared will be able to reach vertical speed values around 5900 ft/hour.":winter:

Yeah but I haven't done it in some months. =) I may be skinny but I have huge thighs so it's not like I'm exactly moving bean pole pistons around ya know? :p I'd be a pretty good sprinter if I were to ever train myself into shape for it. Climbing is just not something people with my legs do great at. I'm sure if I started doing GMR twice a month that in a few months I'd be doing it in maybe 40 minutes.
And regarding dropping you...only on break away speed. And only because I TT can I sustain a pace on the brink of exploding my lungs but eventually that dies off too. =) Plus, you admittedly aren't in the riding form you used to be in so it's kind of incomparable anyway.
After Tucson next Saturday I think I'll start doing GMR bi-weekly. God that'll be cold in a month or so...

Yeah, I was 30 lbs lighter, that helped!:D...I was doing the 42 mile GMR everyweekend for 3 months. Plus I'd do GMR to the shed once or twice during the week. Sometimes I'd do a repeat cause I'd feel so good after the first climb. Riding MTB a couple of times, doing 3 loops around Claremont Hills Wilderness Park couple of times a week really did some good. That was when I did my best time on Ride Around The Bear in 04!:thumb:...Heck, I even rode the 42 on Christmas Day that year. Only saw 2 others!:thumb:
I just started back on a work schedule that will allow me to ride up Baldy Rd in the mornings once I adjust. I actually ate very well this last week, that's a start! I figure this week I'll start climbing so that I can hit The Bear again this year. My goal is to lose the extra 30 lbs I've been draggin' around the last 3 years. I still want to fit Gina into the weekend rides so weekdays will be my climbing days till I drop weight. Then I'll hit the long sustained climbs on weekends!:thumb:
When you get old and married, evenings together are too cozy! Going out to dinner 3 or 4 times a week doesn't help!..Late night Ben and Jerry's doesn't burn fat either!:p

I'm debating it, either SART or GMR. I'm not the greatest climber, and I dumped my 12/27 for an 11/25. I'm not sure how my legs are going to take GMR without the 27, but I'm also lighter than I've been in years (been training my ass off).

Compact or standard double?

Compact. Everyone says I should be okay, I'm not the lightest guy at 175 (I was 195 4 months ago :))
but still its the first time in a few months I've done any sort of climb.

You should be ok!:D...I was 220 and fine with the standard 53/39-12/25:p

I never made it...woke up too late and went on SART, which is a good thing because I didn't have any legs at all today. Too worn from yesterday.

Yes Beanz,
You were flying with that 39 x 25! And I think we're about even on who beat who up GMR/GRR. I think it's 4 to 4, but who's counting? I think I'm ahead on The Bear stats. but only because you stop for Gina's bagels too often. Our "bike times" are pretty similar.
Plus, I almost forgot to mention . . . 2009 with be your first year for the CA Triple Crown. I'm thinking Butterfield and Spring Solvang before The Bear, Grand Tour after. Plus, I think Deb is changing the name of Butterfield to "El Camino Real" Double, which should make it easier for anyone with Spanish DNA!

Well Beanz,
Both the Eastern Sierra Double and Ride Around the Bear are schuduled for June 6th, 2009 and since Jackie and I rode The Bear in 2008, we'll be riding Eastern Sierra in 2009.
Still, even though I won't be there, you can try to beat my best time, which I think is 6:59:13.
Or, at least beat my last year's time, which was 7:09. I'm sure you can do it if you lose those 30 lb. plus keep the 39 x 25, plus save Gina's bagels for after the ride!
And don't worry. There are lots of doubles we can do to get you the Triple Crown jersey, even if you miss Eastern Sierra.

I don't know for sure Beanz,
I'd have to go back to the Bear site and do some research. I'm thinking my 3rd best time was 7:15 or 7:20, and I know you could beat that!
Maybe have Gina just ahead of you, so you could smell the bagels, but she couldn't let you have one until after the finish!

I'll be out at GMR again on Saturday morning. Anyone else going?

Not me. I'll be on the Hemet Double Staff ride. Have fun on GMR!

Still debating. I may do an 80 miler to the beach on Friday (and as far back as I can get or the closest metrolink station) if not I'll probably do GMR on Sat.

True Brandy,
We had a lot of trouble finding a date that would work for everyone, and it kept getting put off and postponed and rescheduled forever (or so it seemed).
We finally settled on Nov. 22nd but then Chris couldn't make it, and Lynn and Dave hadn't been riding enough, so we just finally said, "whatever" Jim Henderson and I will ride it and Jim Watrous said he'd drive SAG for us.
Then just this morning I got an email saying Jim Henderson came down with a bad cold and can't ride it. So . . .
We're looking at a possible reschedule of either Dec. 6th or Dec. 13th.
So yeah, it's late, very late. Better late than never!

Likely going to hit SART on the TT bike Saturday for a 57 miler now that it looks like the rain is not in the schedule anymore for then. Thinking about making Sunday a GMR recovery day. Interested to see how far off 45 minutes I am up to the maintenance shed. I'm looking at starting at the gate at 8 if anyone is interested. I'm not going GMR/GRR though. Just a simple up and back.
