For real! Apparently his wife has requested the sale of some of his collection. Watch ebay and craigslist in his area........

I don't know if it is a wonderful thing to own or just creepy. But I think I'll put in a bid. :)

I'd bet Sheldon would only be happy if, after you won it, that you used it.

I almost hate to see this. I hope it doesn't mean his wife is strapped for money. But I agree with cb400bill . . . Sheldon would want whoever wins it to use it, not put it on display on a shelf somewhere.

how do you know if it's his? if it is, i think we should bid it up to 200.00 or something. at least.

The seller is his wife. And I am sure that saddle will bring around that much, if not more.

I want the Mead Ranger and the Hetchins...They are about my size and I should have them as my daily rider.

I think I'm gonna bid on the saddle...Just for the helluva it.

I kinda would feel weird riding SB's bike. Kinda like if I donned the mantle of greatness
when I possess not that much greatness--just me.

Gets creepier - I had a premonition about this happening about a week ago. And I had known him, and the Harris crew, back in the early 1980's before I moved. Freaky.

Do you have a picture of that Hetchins? Anything from them would be worth a lot of money.

Yes. But, still, I have too much respect for the man he was to just install his saddle on a bike. I'd hang it up and keep it clean. :thumb:

the auction is respectfully done. you have to look closely at the listing to discover the connection w sheldon brown. kudos to the seller.

humbly, jan

The listings are managed by an old friend of him on request of Harriet. Bidding may simply be a way to say thank you for all Sheldon's brought to the cycling world. As mentioned in an earlier post, it's been done discreetly, probably the way he would have liked it.

How could there be any issue with the sale of a collection after someone has died? After family and friends have taken what they wanted, why should his wife hold on to a bunch of bike parts that she'll most likely never use?

Good grief this is being ridiculous. Sheldon's bicycle items are just inanimate objects and I'm sure he would be happy to know that they will be used and (hopefully) lovingly cared for as he did with his Brooks saddles. Having said that I hope that his items for sale will go to someone who knows who he is and appreciates what he has contributed to cycling.

If I could afford to do it, I would. He helped me quite a few times, returning the favor for once would make me feel good. I don't think I could bring myself to use it either, not until it got an adequate Proofide treatment:D.,,,,BD

Thank you, Gary...

While I'm on this subject, I would also like to suggest (and I believe it would be appropriate), that family and/or fans of Sheldon could start a small "museum" of sorts in a space at the Harris Cyclery location to remember him and his contribution to the knowledge and enjoyment of cycling. Some items, such as his beloved Mead Ranger or maybe his homemade tandem, could be displayed and not for sale.

That would be cool!

I hope it doesn't mean his wife is strapped for money.

I think they are more likely strapped for space . Not that anyone else reading this page would
have that problem.

This is the notice John Allen posted on the baystatecycling list.

Over the next few months, several of Sheldon Brown's bicycles, and
numerous components, will be for sale on EBay and Craigslist. My son
Jacob and I are helping Harriet sell these items.

At this time, the first item, a Brooks Professional saddle, is for
sale on EBay. Bids have gone up to $57 so far; bidding closes at 5:17
PM EST Sunday, This item amounts to just dipping a toe into the
water -- *many* more items will be for sale.

Search on <Sheldon Brown bicycle> to find these items (and to avoid
the many items of memorabilia related to

Generally, items of special interest, with a limited market but
likely to sell at a good price and/or easy to ship (e.g., customized
bicycles, 16-inch Greenspeed rear wheel, saddles, will go up on EBay,
and items of more general interest that will probably sell locally
(e.g., steel frames suitable to build up into fixed-gear bikes) on
Craigslist. Run-of-the-mill stuff that wouldn't sell for much, but
can be used to build up usable bicycles, is being donated to Bikes Not Bombs.

If Interested, please keep checking at EBay and Craigslist! I'll be
posting a message here occasionally as more items are posted.

John Allen is a pretty interesting person in bicycling also. http://www.bikexprt.com/bicycle/index.htm
He is the person that film the little trick on folding a tire http://www.sheldonbrown.com/video/tire-folding.html

I hear you, smurfy. But if I were to buy a saddle that I plan to use as just another "inanimate" object, then I'd buy a brand new Brooks Pro for less money. As it is, the bidding is over $150 for the Brooks from Sheldon's collection. To me, a bicycle item from the Sheldon's collection means something. I would imagine this is why you yourself suggested a small "museum of sort" featuring Sheldon's bicycle stuff that are "displayed and not for sale."

+1!! Let those well-cared for old pieces remain well-cared for and used by other enthusiasts, who have benefited from Sheldon's work and knowledge, and now from his choices.

I would never stand in judgment of how another person remembers or honors someone.

But, it might be relevant to note that Sheldon himself was not all at caught up in the mystical. Gods, religions, afterlives, and the like were outside his worldview.

I share the same view. But Sheldon's saddle makes for a nice conversation piece. :)
