I almost hate to see this. I hope it doesn't mean his wife is strapped for money. But I agree with cb400bill . . . Sheldon would want whoever wins it to use it, not put it on display on a shelf somewhere.

The listings are managed by an old friend of him on request of Harriet. Bidding may simply be a way to say thank you for all Sheldon's brought to the cycling world. As mentioned in an earlier post, it's been done discreetly, probably the way he would have liked it.

How could there be any issue with the sale of a collection after someone has died? After family and friends have taken what they wanted, why should his wife hold on to a bunch of bike parts that she'll most likely never use?

Sheldon's bicycle items are just inanimate objects and I'm sure he would be happy to know that they will be used and (hopefully) lovingly cared for as he did with his Brooks saddles. Having said that I hope that his items for sale will go to someone who knows who he is and appreciates what he has contributed to cycling.

While I'm on this subject, I would also like to suggest (and I believe it would be appropriate), that family and/or fans of Sheldon could start a small "museum" of sorts in a space at the Harris Cyclery location to remember him and his contribution to the knowledge and enjoyment of cycling. Some items, such as his beloved Mead Ranger or maybe his homemade tandem, could be displayed and not for sale.

That would be cool!

Generally, items of special interest, with a limited market but
likely to sell at a good price and/or easy to ship (e.g., customized
bicycles, 16-inch Greenspeed rear wheel, saddles, will go up on EBay,
and items of more general interest that will probably sell locally
(e.g., steel frames suitable to build up into fixed-gear bikes) on
Craigslist. Run-of-the-mill stuff that wouldn't sell for much, but
can be used to build up usable bicycles, is being donated to Bikes Not Bombs.

I hear you, smurfy. But if I were to buy a saddle that I plan to use as just another "inanimate" object, then I'd buy a brand new Brooks Pro for less money. As it is, the bidding is over $150 for the Brooks from Sheldon's collection. To me, a bicycle item from the Sheldon's collection means something. +1!! Let those well-cared for old pieces remain well-cared for and used by other enthusiasts, who have benefited from Sheldon's work and knowledge, and now from his choices.

I would never stand in judgment of how another person remembers or honors someone.
