I have decided to pull the old bike down before it's too late! The shifter has two levers, a smaller black one on top and a grey one on the bottom. I assume ( I certainly don't remember!) that the balck one will shift more than one gear at a time? Or does one lever shift up and the other shift down. Feeling stupid !

One lever is for shifts into a higher (harder) gear, the other is for shifts into an easier hill climb gear.

Do a bit more than that- Oil the chain- take it for a quick spin and check the brakes and gears do work properly and while your at it- Check that the saddle will be comfortable. If it ain't -grease the butt aswell.

Fatal washing the bike- They shrink in the wet. Unless you have a preshrunk one and then the saddle will not be ok.

A fatal error already but I did think I should get the cobwebs off. This is an old bike so I am sure it has already done a lot of shrinking. Regardless I won't know the effects on the saddle for quite a while as my initial trips will be quite short. I'll keep you posted :)
