Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - cleaning up only chrome

I found some old Champion steel drop bars at a yard sale today. Would look great, but they have some cosmetic scratches and whatnot. I will be wrapping them if I use them, but want to clean them up a bit. Particularly around the the flare where stem sits. Anyone know of a easy way, or a link to a DIY polish. I have tied chrome polish and buffing, even rubbing compound, but can't get the scratches out. Any ideas.

yeah, with a dremel. They seem to be deep, like it cut through the plating.

Also, there is a little bit of rust where the stem attaches, any thoughts on cleaning that up?

You may have to sand it down to the metal & then polish that if the scratches are too deep.

If the scratches are through the chrome plating, don't go overboard in trying to polish them out. You will just polish off the chrome around the scratches. If you do that it will look fine for a few days or weeks, then it will start rusting. Then you need to polish it all the time or throw the bars out because they look like carp.

A dremel or other tool will only allow you to screw them up faster than by hand.

#0000 steel wool is the only way to go.
