Mountain Biking - noob question

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I really don't know how else to word the topic. My question is how high should my seat post be? Should I have to straighten my legs nearly all the way when peddeling? Or should it be low enough that I can touch the ground when sitting on the seat? Is the an optimal hight that will allow me to get the most power from my legs? Thanks.

Your first inclination is correct. You want the seat high enough that you get good extension on your pedaling stroke. There is a much more involved explanation on this page if you scroll down:

If you are talking xc, then yes that is definately the preferred seat height.
Thanks. That article helps quite a bit. I will have to give his suggestions a try.
