In South Dakota there is an annual charity event called the “Gut Check”, which entails riding across the State of South Dakota within 48 hours. The ride is 412 miles and it truly could be a Gut Check if the wind would be in your face most of the way. 2009 event will be August 7-9.

This year favorable winds resulted in some fantastic times. Recorded 1st ( Mike Dunlap (51): 22:45 2008). As far as I know no one has done it unsupported and I have thoughts of giving it ago this next August. They also have a category called the “Hell and Back” which would be going border to border twice in 96 hrs.(start for this would be Aug 5th from either border). One rider attempted last year and made it to Hell but not back.

Since I plan an unsupported ride I would need to get back to my car, so I thought what the Heck go for Hell and maybe Back. My idea would be keeping a close eye on the extended forcast and start at the border with the most favorable wind conditions in my favor. There are some desolate stretches out west of the Missouri River so I would have to plan carefully beforehand on where my stops would be for water, food, and rest.

I would be riding an unfaired LowRacer with rear rack on which I could carry a light sleeping bag, tarp or Space blanket for shelter, xtra clothing, rain gear, Hydration bag, playtypus bag, water bottles w/ energy drink, bike repair items and cell phone. Keeping water containers full would be a priority. Wondering what might be the best energy/subsistance foods to carry along. Want to keep my load under 10 lbs. if possible. Did about 6 centuries this year and feel pretty comfortable at a 18-20 mph pace over long distances.

Looking for any comments or suggestions. Right now I am in the dreamworks stage. This would be my first attempt at an event such as this.

It sounds a lot like BMB, LEL or PBP. I'd do a google search on those ultra cycling events and read what others have done. Are there any official rest stops? with food and a place to rest, without those it will be tough at night and when stores are closed or not available.

Yikes! I drove across most of South Dakota this summer. Not much along the interstate. I can't imagine how desolate the back roads are.

Good luck!

Well, at least now I know how wide South Dakota is.

If you back out of it - you can still sit at home and hit yourself with a hammer.
