I'm a big kid ( 6'1" 250 lbs) that is just making the move into Road Bikes from many years beating a Cannondale Super V into submission...

Initially, I put an extra pair of SPD pedals on my new road bike, and jumped on with my MTB shoes...all is well while on a nice easy cadence...but if I really get on them (standing up while climbing, for example) I feel as if I am going to come right out of them...

so the question, money notwithstanding, which pedals to choose to give the confidence that If I am really going to pedal hard, whatever the situation, I am going to stay in them! I am prepared to buy road shoes, if that is necessary (I assume that is the route to go...)

HELP!

Track pedals with double clips 'n' straps, and a cleated shoe. Once you're locked in, you're locked in. Make sure you get some nice laminated straps, to avoid stretching.

unfortunatly, you will never get out with that system, and its a b*tch to get into clips and straps.

To answer the original question, just about any road clipless pedal with a fairly large platform will do you fine. I like my SPD-SLs, others like there looks, and still others like speedplays. All are fairly secure platforms.

On another note, what is the model number of your SPD cleats? Are they the SH55s or the SH51s? the SH55s are for hybrids, and are designed to pull out if you pull really hard on the pedals. with the tension cranked up, and using SH51s, your foot wont come out that easily...

We have the same MB
I ride with Shimano SPD pedals on both bikes with mountain shoes (New Sidi Dominator 4's now) and have never felt like I was about to come out of the pedals.
Maybe your cleats are worn??

Oh, it's not all that rough. Back when i was a Serious Rider (tm) i used those wacky 105 (pre-clipless) pedals with their bizarre cleats. You just have to remember to loosen the strap(s) enough to get your feet out again. (That magic dance where the cleat likes to slide along on concrete is another story)

Nowadays, I still use clips and straps with whatever shoes I happen to be wearing. If I've gotta wear the steeltoes, I break out the pedal wrench and slap a pair of bmx pedals on.

For big guys like us a big platform is a must have.. I got back into riding last year and switched to the new campy pedals and felt so uncomfortable when standing up, felt like the pedals were going to snap off at the spindle.. I ended up going back to my old time TFT pedals.. They can be had for real cheap on ebay and even the new style time have a much bigger platform and feel secure.. Stay with steel axles and you will feel great..
