Tandem Cycling - Used or New stoker stem

I'm trying to locate a stoker telescopic stem.

We currently have the Co-Motion long chrome / billet block adjustable stem on our bike.

Yes it does work and work well, both as a lift handle and control mount, it does have one concern.

The wife has the bars fairly far forward, exposing the aft end of this capped chrome tube. Yes we can make all sorts of jokes, but let's not. Seriously, I'm concerned for her knee as it could possibly impact the tube while getting on or off the bike.

So here's my quest, finding a telescopic aluminum stem for a 26.0 handlebar and to fit a 29.8 seatpost. It also has a fairly steep angle.

Anyone upgraded to the newer size bars (31.8) and have one they are willing to part with?

why not cut off the extra length that you don't need?

I considered that. I do believe though that if I did there would then be the end of a hollow tube with chipped chrome.

The other consideration is, cost wise, I'd be money ahead buying a stem and keeping this Co-Mo stem intact. The price on this thing was something crazy like $150 or so.

you could cap it with a handlebar plug if it fits, or a cork. there's a standard one on ebay right now that i might bid on. i was thinking i would use the part that holds the handlebars to mount a set of drop bars and use the original with the cowhorns that my wife uses. that way i could swap between bars easily for different riders. i already have two rear seatposts, one for my wife with her setup and one for everybody else so i don't mess up her setup as she is the stoker most of the time.

I'd be more concerned with stoker impaling herself on that type of stem in case of a crash. Rather poor design; telescoping stem avoids impalement issue.
No, stoker does not roll over the bars in tandem crashes . . .

Yes I agree and this is one reason I want to swap it out. My wife is 5'6" and has the bars quite forward. I was hoping to find used one but if needed I'll order a new stem.
