Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Ross?

Has anyone ever heard of a Ross bike? I found a single speed Ross on craigslist but can't find out anything about them online. All it says on the posting is that it has sugino cranks. If you know about them are they worth this much?

I have two friends that have ross bikes. one is a single speed conversion, one is fixed. I've ridden on the single speed, which on the short rides i took seemed pretty alright. I've never been able to ride my other friends bike because I'm too short.

I'd be hesitant on that for that price. Looks like someone is trying to capatilize on the trend. Also, are you really short, thats a small frame.

I've seen one. thought it would be possible for a ss conversion but then I noticed bent dropouts.. not usable---I would guess that they make some larger frames- just an educated guess-

You could probably build that exact bike for about $50.

Yah, my frame's stand over is right near 29 inches, my pants are 28 and the frame is fine. This is one of the smallest frames I have ever seen, so I snagged it up!

Ross churned out plenty of basic bikes during the bike boom, and that's one of them. Many would make fine conversions. As stated above, the one in the link is overpriced.

What is your max budget?

$275 seems too high for that conversion.

way too high. that is as janky a conversion as you will find.

Ross made crap, and they also made some decent stuff. I think on the headbadge it'll say Allentown (small) Ross. Those were made in PA. I picked one up at a thrift store with full Shimano 600 for $50. Those are decent.

That is a crap conversion. SS with front brake only? Fail.

What a ripoff. No one in their right mind should pay that *****hole the $225 (at least) upcharge he's putting on a dumpster bike +$25 in tires, tubes, tape, etc. Wow. You know how to convert a cassette to singlespeed. Here, go charge someone $200 for the ten minutes of work you did. At the shop I work in, we charge like $40 for a full conversion job, including labor, using the original parts and a new chain. We'll even sometimes dremel up a custom chain guard out of the old parts, just for fun and to make it a little more trick. It pisses me off to see some jerkov taking advantage of unassuming college kids or dropout 20 somethings (sorry for the broad stereotyping) who think they're getting a good deal cause it was on craigslist. This is a lesson of why to go to your trusted LBS. Here's some advice: wake up early one saturday and go to all the garage/estate/yard sales you can that are listed in your local paper. I can pretty much gaurantee that you will be able to find a better, name brand complete bike for under $50. Usually in the $20-30 neighborhood. Shop around a little (but don't waste too much time or it may sell out from under you) and buy the one in the best shape. Then, go to the best shop you have nearby and ask them to convert it for you. They shouldn't charge more than $50 (including parts and labor). If they do, go somewhere else or site the fact that another mechainc (me) told you that was as high as it should be. This, of course, is assuming you don't buy a rusted-out, trashed piece of crap and require tons of little, hard to find parts (you might want to stay away from french stuff). Then, add all the new little colored bits to your liking and budget and you've still stayed easily $150 less than that piece. Plus, you learn a lot in the process and it's fun. Or, go waste a lot of money on the fun that someone else got to have and overpay for the garbage you're riding (no offense to Ross). Sorry for the rant.

rear drops appear to be stamped is not a real high end Ross price seems a little high.
