When I removed the clipped pedals from my bike there was a thin washer between the pedal bolt and crankarm. Is this washer necessary for my clipless pedals? What is its function?

No, not sure what it's function was for your old pedals but assuming you have somewhat standard cranks all you have to do is grease the threads on your new pedals and tighten them on. Don't go too much farther than hand tight. They won't loosen up.

I used to have a similar setup with my old Specialized Strongarm II cranks and pedals. Apparently, the washers came with the cranks, not the pedals. My new XT cranks don't fit these washers, so the installation doesn't include the washers. On the Strongarm II cranks however, they fit, so I leave it to you to decide ...

More than likely they come with the cranks. They keep the crank arm from getting scored when the pedals are tightened down

Thanks for the replys. I tried both ways and the pedal bolts fit all the way in perfect without the washers. The bolt and crankarm are almost flush on the inward side. Seems fine. By the way, it is a Truvativ Firex crank and Time ATAC pedals.
