I'm an older guy, ride a Trek hybrid bike for recreation 1-2 times a week when Connecticut weather allows. Stumbled across this forum searching for ideas and am delighted to find a resource for cyclists. I'd like to get a rack & pannier or bag combo so I could ride up to the university where I work with my 15" laptop when weather's good, just a few miles, and am just starting to read through some of the threads featuring this topic.

Welcome to the forums. You will find a lot of good advice here. My hybrid is about 12 years old, but is getting neglected lately as I started buying old road bikes. Last weekend my brother and I went to a local bike store (lbs) and I fell in love with a specialized hybrid.
