I have a week old brand new bike. Recently, it started to make this scratchy noise in the freewheel when I glide or freewheel as if it were rusty, old, and dry with no lubrication. It does the same noise when I pedal backwards fast. I took the rear wheel and checked to make sure nothing's loose around the cassette and freewheel. Everything seems ok from outside. Any ideas on what might be causing this noise? Thanks in advance.

What brand of freehub? DIfferent freehub manufactuers use different pawl designs and quanity of pawls which create unique sounds. Campy freehubs kind of sound like a fart, while Mavic freehubs sound rough, and Chris King freehubs are just plain LOUD.

I have an old bike with frewheel and large spoke protector. There is very little clearance between the spoke protector and the freewheel down near the hub. When road grit gets in there, it makes a scratchy sound.
