Hi all,

I am a foreigner --a gaijin in the local jargon-- living in Japan and am looking for a GPS system for my bicycle to navigate the nameless roads in this country.

One very convenient feature would be English --or romanized-- names and menus in the whole system.

Anyone found such a thing in the "land of technology"? Any possibility to buy this device outside Japan?

The cell phones in Japan can be used for this, but the maps come in Japanese.

Garmin and the other big companies make gps map software for Japan, but since they are made more fore driving I'm not sure how detailed they'd be for small country roads - if that's where you'd be cycling. As for paper maps, the Road Atlas Japan published by Shobunsha is in romaji so you can read it without Japanese ability.

I suspect that some regular Japanese gps units have a romaji mode as well, but I haven't used them. Hopefully someone here can provide some recommendations.

Inagi? I am in Tama. Right down the hill from you or a little down the river :)
No answer for your question though...
