Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - How long riding fixed? How far do you ride?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Because I have senioritis /am avoiding studying, and am tired of lurking....
How long have you been riding fixed? Do you commute or just play?
I just put together my first conversion a month and a half ago and am hooked. Haven't touched my other bikes and have barely driven since. I commute as much as possible and try to ride 10-15 miles/day (not much, I know).
PS: any other girls out there??

I put down 30-50 km a day (18-30 miles) and rode my fixed gear bikes over 8000 km last year (5000 miles) which was half of my total miles.
I built my first fixed gear in May of '07.
I work as a messenger and the fixed gear bikes get a lot of play although I also use a geared bike for work.
I've been riding fixed for six weeks or so, and I ride around 15 miles a day on average.
fixed since april of this year. used to do maybe 100 miles a week between commuting and social rides. now i do maybe 100 a month tops, mostly commuting and solo rides.
i grew up in west san jose- know of any good rides in the south bay area?

Riding fixed for only a couple months. I usually ride about 100 miles a week but since it is dark and cold here that number is quickly dropping.
I just put together my first conversion a month and a half ago...

I've gone carless for 2 years now, but only riding fixed for a few months. Decided to throw in the towel and take my friends' advice on riding fixed.
I don't bike that far every day, since I live close to my job, probably about 3 miles total commute. After work I run errands and stuff, so maybe 7-8 miles a day?

I've only been riding fixed since late June, and I commute into work each day, but it's only a 4.25 mile round trip here in Brooklyn. I ride on longer trips on weekends typically, and it seems more fun than my previous freewheeled bicycles.
Think it has been a little over three years or so. Used to ride 25-30 miles of hills a day (rain, snow or shine) for first two years fixed (finishing college), now just 5-10 miles (working from home has its disadvantages). I do try to go out on a longer ride every week or two.
I don't ride fixed. This is also the single-speed forum, doncha know.
I think we need our own forum so we're not associated with these twitchy-bike riders with their girl pants and their white belts and their Pabst Blue Ribbon.

about a year. Got back into bikes like a year and a half ago and wanted to get a road bike, tried out my friend's conversion, then eventually bought my IRO.
On a typical day I only ride like 3 miles tops because I'm a full time student and I work, so most of my riding is regulated to and from campus/work. I live less than a mile from campus, but it seems like it's really far because this town is so hilly.

Got my fixed gear at the end of September. Have had days where I just ride it around the neighborhood for a few minutes, but also have had 40 mile days as well. It is getting too cold for my liking (I know, I'm a wuss, HTFU and all that jazz) but on days where I do ride, it is always over 10 miles, and usually over 20.

Pics are a must, even if it isn't anything special. And yes, this habit will eat through a wallet just as fast, if not faster than your local dope fiend.
Been riding fixed for about 1 year --
Daily commute is 15 miles -- plus messing around town. Longest ride is about 40 miles -- legs were fine but I definitely need a new saddle for that type of ride.

Well, considering the OP's named this thread "How long riding fixed?" ...

Suck it up, Frank. Winter riding is fun after you adjust to the cold as long as there's no ice or wet leaves on the road, or both, and you fall and f up your knee.

I nearly froze into a popsicle on my way to work today. Thankfully I had bought new gloves for cycling at Dick's Sporting Goods which kept my fingers from chipping off.
I am thinking about getting those Under Armour garments to keep me warm during the winter ... in fact imma make a thread about that to see if anyone has used them before.
I am tired of freezing my ass off on my way to work.

Not really, I pretty much just ride to get where I need to go, or head downtown/on the Campbell trail with friends. There is bike party once a month, and a fixed gear group at SJSU but I haven't ridden with them.

One year fixed, had a junky singlespeed for a few months before that, been riding in general ($10 10-speeds from Salvation Army for the most part) since fall 2002 (when I got turned onto bikes through the cooperative house I lived at for a while during college).
Generally I ride 20-40 miles per day, depending on the weather and my mood. I have been on public transit once in the past two months, and carfree for the past three years.

I would get bibs + tights + arm warmers before I went with under armour, only because it is cycling specific, and from what I hear, way more comfortable.

I figured you, or anyone, would say that. I've always wanted to ride in the snow, but getting out there when it is sub freezing is very hard for me. Maybe I just need some new, warm clothes.

I must say I'm impressed by anyone that rides in snow/crazy cold weather. I'm kind of a spoiled brat, having never lived outside of the bay area.

Wish I could say I had a choice. :)
Seattle is fun in the winter -- 20mph headwinds and pouring rain for 6 months.
Not a lot of snow, though. Just have to gear-up -- it can be kind of fun, actually.

Yeah, you do get funny looks. If they only realized that fixie riders don't really have the option to go slow up hills. Hahaha.

Sure they do. Walking. lol. But yeah, theres a reason why its, htfu, not htfd.

Not counting all the years on BMX and Stingray bikes as a kid, I've ridden SS for about 3 months. I ride a 10-15 route 2 or 3 times a week. Not very far, but I ride it as fast as I can. :thumb:

there's a cool bike path that goes from morgan hill to hellyer velodrome in san jose or vice versa. its about 30 miles roundtrip and bike path all the way.
as for the thread, i've been riding fixed for two and a half years or so.. i actually have no idea how many miles a day i ride, but i only get in my car once a week to drive downtown to a sailing class. sometimes i ride there as well. probably somewhere around 15 miles a day.

I was waking up at 5:15am just to ride my fixed before work at least 15 miles for exercise. But sadly I won't be doing that anymore, it's almost time to hang up the fixed for the winter. I woke up at 5:00am today for a ride and it was 28 degrees out, I only did about 10 miles and that was enough. I just had my running tights on and a fleece and which wasn't enough. It's going to be a long cold winter. I will just start running again in the winter, I enjoy running more in the winter than the summer for some reason. Crisp air in my lungs is precise!
been riding for almost 4 weeks. it's been awesome.

When I started riding fixed regularly I never saw another fixed/singlespeed bike on Sunset Blvd in Echo Park. It would be another 5 years before I started to see another fixed gear on the road, perhaps once a week or so at most. Now, practically every other bike I see in mi barrio is either fixed or singlespeed. I am old.

I go back and forth between my FG commuter and my 27 spd Surly Crosscheck. If the Sacramento valley never had wind, I'd ride fixed all the time. But it does, so there are days where I need gears.
But yesterday I rode 32 miles and today around 30. One week I rode 200 miles all fixed. For the year, my fixed gear has about 2700 miles on it.
just built it, mostly searching here, i ride a mile or two on the side walk a day

I've only been riding fixed for 6 months. But I have been riding singlespeed for over two years, so my legs were pretty strong and used to just one gear.
I ride for fun whenever I can, many miles at a time. But, daily, I just commute to work. I have two jobs, commute just one mile each way to one, 4 miles each way to the other. some days I work one some days I work both so, I dunno anywhere from two to ten miles a day.
and, I'm a girl too :) and, also from San Jose, what do you know :) kinda wish I still lived there because there seems to be a fixed bike culture growing there now that was not there when I left the bay area 2 years ago.
and in response to the singlespeed dude who said he didn't want to be associated with twitchy riders in white belts with pbrs in hand, I don't drink, don't wear white belts and I'm not "twitchy" I just discovered how much fun riding fixed is. maybe you should try it instead of hatin'.

been riding fixed for 3 months already. learned alot within first months! feels like a year already...
Been riding a fixed gear for about a year now. I have about 800km on my fixed commuter and about another 250km on a couple of very vintage racing bikes. I have put over 5,000 under my wheels this year, most of that on my recumbent though.:D
I have done longer rides of about 50km but my commute is only about 7km one way. I have found that towing a loaded trailer into a strong headwind on a fixed gear is damn good strength training.:D
there's a cool bike path that goes from morgan hill to hellyer velodrome in san jose or vice versa. its about 30 miles roundtrip and bike path all the way.
thanks for the heads up. think i might hit that up when i go back north for thanksgiving. hope it's not too hilly and hope it doesn't rain next week.
