Aside from solid tires, is there a tire that excells in performance,
ie: resistance to flats, good on corners, etc.? There seems to be a lot of manufacturers, and even more models claiming to be great tires. To be used for urban riding on road bike.

The best tires that I have used are Continental Grand Prix 3000s. I love these tires. They grip very well in corners, even in the wet, they're quite light and they seems to be pretty durable -- I have 3500 km on this set and I think I'll get about 1000 km more in the spring. They are pricey, though. One of my riding buddies uses Continental Ultra 1000s, which are much less expensive, and he claims they have similar performance.

I recommend Gommitalia Calypso tires . . . They were written up in Bicycling magazine some months ago, so I decided to try them . . . Couldn't believe the difference I felt in my ride, and they are wearing extemely well . . . And the really good news is that you'll pay about as much for the pair as you will for a single tire of some other "high performance" tires.:D

Panaracer make good urban tyres. My Pasela seem to be tough enough for commuting. For training and commuting, use the biggest tyres you can fit in your road bike, they are generally more resistant to damage and will save your rims.
Solid tyres dont work at all.
I use Specialized S-works with a tyre liner (mr tuffy) (SP).
with the tyres at max psi this seems to work for me.
I also wipe my tyres after I ride thru a road that has some glass.
and I stand when I run into pot holes or bumps in the road.
I think these tyres are great for cornering.
and riding in the rain.

As I've said in other threads, I'm very happy with my vredestein spider's - slick in the centre, with small knobbles on the side that only kick in when cornering or travelling on soft off road surfaces. After 900 miles I've yet to have a puncture and they show next to no wear. They've got a puncture resistant compound which by all accounts works. I've got next to no experience with other tyres so I can't comment on comparitive rolling resistance.

Don't get any idea that solid tyres are even worth considering. They are all absolute cr@p!
