General Cycling Discussion - Gore Tex and soaps..Which one.

Gore Tex is supposed to require non detergent soaps. That means no phosphates.. It's winter time and the Gore Tex is getting stinky.. Any specific soap recommendations for keeping your winter Gore Tex non smelly.

I just use regular powdered stuff and set it for an extra rinse cycle.

I was hoping for specific brands.. Yes. The old thread did give us some specifics.. SportWash and Baby Ganics.. I was hoping for something you can find at the local supermarket , still considered a non detergent soap..

Had my goretex for around 12 years now and it looks and works like new. And 10 of those years were offroad with plenty of Mud and other stuff making it require a wash after most rides.

I just put it in with my normal cycling clothes wash and use a normal washing powder or liquid. Cool wash at 30 deg C and NO conditioner. Hang on line to dry or a cool tumble dry but to be honest- it can be hung on the back of a chair to dry just as quick.

Right- just checked and over here we have a "Delicate Wash" soap liquid. The one in the cupboard is a Supermarket brand so you won't find it unless you have a "Waitrose" supermarket over there- but I hope that all delicate wash products would be the same.

Look for ones for Wollens or baby clothes and check the label.

For maybe half a year now I've been using dried fruits of the Sapindus mukorossi -tree (also called Chinese Soapberry Tree). The dried fruits are called "organic soap nuts" and sold in various forms and brand names (we have at least SAMU and WUP). Funny thing is, the fruits leave the laundry completely odor free. I was so used to having the "clean laundry smell" in clothes it felt strange at first. The fruits are not particularly good at removing tough stains (ink, juices, wine...) but I seldom have those on my outdoor shell clothes. Other than that, they do a good job, can be disposed of with biodegradeable waste, and are supposedly produced following principles for sustainable production.

i just use powdered detergent, then retreat with revievex spray. it has the directions on the bottle, and each bottle is good for about 6-8 uses

My recollection is that Gore recommends using any powdered detergent, followed by a water repellent treatment, e. g. Scotch-gard. It works for me...
