Hello,
I'll be moving to the northwest part of Downey very close to the Rio Hondo river off of Florence Blvd. Living in Pico Rivera, I'm used to the San Gabrial river.
Anyway, how safe is the Rio Hondo river bike trail? Is going north safer than going south? Is north more scenic?
TIA
I ride the LA river as part of my daily commute. I go from Long Beach to Commerce roughly, so I imagine the section of trail you'll be riding might overlap part of the trail I ride. I wouldn't call that section of the trail scenic, but I suppose that depends on what you define as scenic. ;) The most important thing I've found on any trail in regards to safety is timing. While riding in the morning (after sunrise) the most unsafe thing I've ever seen is people out walking their dogs without leashes. Riding at the dusk/dark time frame and things change. A lot more people out drinking, smoking, spray-painting, etc. under the under passes, but I've still never had any problems. I always have pepper spray with me, and thankfully haven't had to use it.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I usually ride the SGRBT from Wilderness park down south and back. I don't like riding north of there because it doesn't seem safe to me and I don't like the scenery plus bathrooms are hard to find north of there.
I guess I'll just to get out there and explore.
