Fifty Plus (50+) - Traffic School... ugh

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Got a traffic ticket a while back for turning left through some yellow lines or something. Today I'm doing my online traffic school. It beats going to one in person, that's for sure. I've passed all the practice tests, and now it's on to my actual test. If I fail, I have to show up somewhere in person and try again.
I'd rather be biking!!!

Maybe after you finish your virtual driving, you can go on a virtual bike ride.

If someone who drives like you do were really a bad driver you'd be dead by now.
You should do it in person and then give the instructor hell about cyclists :D

At least you can use traffic school. I have a CDL, and we're not allowed traffic school any longer, no matter what we were driving at the time of the offense.

What's a CDL? Sounds dangerous . . .
there you go DG, if you had a CDL, you would not have to go to school..............it would be worse. Then you'd be driving trucks, and have the oportunity to get tickets for overweight and other infractions.........

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.
No, no. Don't do it.
And keep your eye on the sparrow
when the going gets narrow.
Well, well, well, well well.

Well done!
There is something to be said for live traffic school though. It's amusing in a bizarre way. Your classmates are the main attraction.
The last time I had to take it, it was in Mission Valley. The course was taught by a Highway Patrolman who hadn't had any sleep the night before and spent a lot of time in class detailing exactly what he as a cop looked for when deciding who to ticket, and what and what not to say to the cops.
I took it to heart, and so far, so good. It's been about 15 years now, ticket free.

I like to keep my car in drive with my foot on the brake. Then I let the car creep forward as he's talking to me through the window.

Any questions about what to do when encountering a cyclist?

I shouldn't say this but, in 38 years of driving I have never been stopped let alone ticketed. :innocent:

Nope, but get this...there was a question about which professional race first used seat belts...(turns out it was Indy 500 -- but why should a question like this be on a test like this?)

My daughter was in shock when she first started driving in L.A. as it's
a lot different than back here. She say's some of the laws are kinda
quirky and the driving is, well, harder. Virtual traffic school.....guess
that sorta 'splains it. :D

If the traffic school was worthwile, do you now know what you did that resulted in the ticket, and do you know how to avoid doing that in the future........
If not, then what's the point of "traffic school"?

In 57 years of driving (I started when I was 12), 2 very minor traffic tickets, one other stop, none for the past 25 years.

I was stopped in Jakarta 26 years ago. No infringement, no other traffic, just an anglo driving along alone in the late evening. Purely ritual. "I'm going to fine you"
I took great pleasure in saying "Surely Officer we can sort this out without involving a lot of paperwork?"
It was worth the resulting exchange of $10 just to say that once in my life :thumb:

My friends who work and live in Indonesia tell me that there is a saying that:"In some countries, the bribes are above the table, and others the bribes are under the table, but in Indonesia, the bribes include the table." That's what they tell me.

Oh, yeah. Now we have stoplight cameras at a lot of intersections around here. Running a yellow is no fun anymore.

Ho yup, and don't want to thread hi-jack, but since the topic has emerged
Every time out of the country at the security check - "Your plane is leaving soon. There's an irregularity with your passport. I should pass this to my superiors, but that will take a number of weeks. Or possibly, if you help me, we could make the necessary adjustments here"
And on the way back in - "Did you bring me a present? There's a problem with your residence visa, it ought to be investigated at a higher level, but I have a little discretion"
Personally, I loved it.

TDF would be a wrong answer?

This happened all the time when I lived in Mexico. Usually you get a way for a few bucks.
One time, though, I was driving right along the border, and a policeman stopped me and told me he wanted $100 to let me go. I then proceeded to explain (in Spanish) that I lived in Mexico City and I knew the difference between the Mexican rate and the gringo rate and that I was not about to pay the gringo rate just because I was only a few hundred yards from the border. $5 later I was on my way...

At the risk of sounding like your mother, that statement doesn't exactly evoke confidence that you have a firm grasp of the rules. :D
I went to one of those comic traffic schools about 13 years ago. Actually, I've been to 2 of those in the past 20 years. They were hilarious; the teacher at my last class reminded me of Eddie Murphy, what a riot. But when it came time for the serious topics -- speed and driving under the influence -- they were dead serious. The humor made the day a lot of fun..... but there are million things I'd rather do than give up one of my weekend days off for that.

I almost got ticketed once in Japan for speeding. Cops pulled up next to me as we're driving along, I guess to pull me over (I knew I was speeding). They saw it was a Westerner, probably didn't want to be bothered with the whole East meets West ticketing thing, so they pulled in front on me and turned on a small streaming banner sign in their rear window that said "Osaette, kudasai"--"Slow down, please."
Yes, they have the technology!
The drawback of online traffic school is having to go somewhere to take the test. I got a friend who is a notary to stamp and sign my son's test, but she said she really was not supposed to. Fortunately, the traffic court evidently did not mind, as long as they got their fine money (more than $300 for violating a "no right turn 6 to 9 am" sign -- give me a break)!

So why not just burn your driver's license on the traffic court steps in protest? I mean afterall, you do own several bikes. You will never miss the car! And you will feel good just knowing you are helping the environment!
