So I replaced the rear derailluer on my cross check with a used 10 speed Campagnolo Record short cage I bought at veloswap.
Shimano 9 speed bar end shifter
Campy Record 10 speed Rear Deraileur short cage
Shimano 9 speed Cassette 12-27
The Stock Shimano bar end shifter is still there and so is the stock 9 speed shimano cassette.
I can get it to shift fine in all gears except 3 from the lowest and 3 from the highest. It half shifts and clunks and pops under load.
I am trying to race this setup so it makes the poor shifting even worse. I still have the stock tiagra long cage rear i could put back on but I like the campy better.
Is there a way to make this work? Does the Jtek pulley fix this situation.

You could run the bar end in friction mode, but that would kind of defeat the purpose of the RD upgrade.

I could but under load the chain will still jump and pop.

There is no reason it should not shift perfectly when in friction mode. If the jumps and pops are occurring it is due to a worn chain, cogs, or both.

I will try it in friction mode.
The chain and cassette are brand new.

I would check the b tension screw and make sure your upper pulley is not too close to your cogs
You need Shiftmate

Shiftmate will make it work but costs about an extra $30.00 Add that to the cost of the der and you could have bought a new Shimano that would have had no issues. IMO, sell the Campy and buy the correct rear der. Used CF Record ders bring more money used than a new Shimano. Shimano 9 sp rears are really cheap on ebay now. Good luck

So I took the Cross Check for a ride today in friction shift mode. It seemed to shift fine. I will take it to the cyclocross course this week and see if it works.
I have come full circle in cycling technology.
