View Full Version : Noise around crank area?

Went out for a ride the other day and heard a creaking around the crank area.

I don't think it is the cranks because I had my trusty LBS actually tighten the crank bolts and Locktite them (I don't have a torquewrench) 64 miles ago. Also, it doesn't seem to be a pedal issue. Frame looks OK, also. The bike has a total of about 200 miles on it. I bought it new in November, 2003. It is a Cannondale CAAD4 road bike, with Shimano SPD pedals, and all 105 components (including the BB) If it matters, my cadence is about 80-90 rpm.

......opinions?

Thanks, -Karl

Her is a list of typical problems:

Seat post
saddle clamp
pedal not tight enough
Bottom Bracket
valve nut not tight

Does the "creak" occure at the same spot in the pedal stroke? Did you try only clipping in with one foot?

Hope this helps,

Without know more about the problem, I suggest you check the BB for tightness and lubrication. Other casues of the problem are as ehenz states.

I was having the similar problem, noise on the right down pedal, and after trying to tighten everything with no results, I completely removed the bb and found that it was, as a cartridge type, busted in that the inner spindle was loose from the outer bb casing. I took it into the lbs and they told me I def needed a new one, so its on order now.
