This is not a thread about dying a brooks saddle on purpose; instead it is a question aimed at all the people who have completed a hipster trifector, owning a fixed gear, buying a brooks saddle, and wearing dry denim (eg nudies, apc, skulls, evisu, whatever). I personally do like a bit of dry denim, and not washing, and as such I tend to shed a bit of indigo around the place... anyone also wearing dry jeans and riding a brooks saddle? particularly honey? I bought a b17 narrow, in dark brown, to avoid it looking bad when the blue rubs onto it, but I've found it to be too narrow, now I'm looking at a team pro, and can only choose black or honey... the honey's nice, but maybe not when it's tinged with blue :s?

I know this thread is like +100000 hipster, but I figure someone might have some more input. I asked on a denim forum first haha, but got little response, so hopefully cyclists wear trendy jeans more than denimheads ride bikes?

Swamp ass much?

Just kidding. Sounds like a problem. Fortunately, my B17 is green.

I've asked this before, but maybe you can give me some fresh perspective. Is there any way in which riding your bike in jeans which you do not wash is not really, really disgusting?

You're sitting on a nice saddle with stank nasty-ass smelling jeans . . . no wonder your saddle is blue.

If you wash your pants, they are probably going to look the same as if you didnt wash them, because they are actually meant to be, well, washed.

wash your jeans, dork.

if you're worried about shrinkage, hang them up to dry and wash on cold.

and how about putting a plastic bag over your saddle? or does that take away style points?

on the other hand, if you go for the black brooks, you'll most likely get a huge black mark in your ass crack that'll make it look like you **** your pants.

He is probably worried about ruining dye job (most people worry about this when it comes to jeans) or the fabric itself. That or they are new and he is still breaking them in.

Wash your jeans on gentle cycle in cold water. Pull them inside out before you throw them in the wash, and add 2 tablespoons of salt with it. Wash with other jeans or dark clothes.

Sorry to gay up the thread, but it's useful info for people wanting to keep their jeans nice.

this is the worst thing i have read so far on this forum. i would have rather read about dying brooks saddles blue...

Perhaps I am not quite understanding what you said, but what exactly is so hipstery about being concerned about an expensive saddle being discolored?

I had to google "dry denim" just to figure out what was going on here.

I think I bought a pair of these jeans once by mistake because the indigo dye kept rubbing off on things until I washed them a few times in a row. I am surprised to learn that people really wear a pair of pants for 6 months without washing them when they are not homeless or something. Hell, I lived in the woods for a year and managed to wash my pants once a week in a stream.

Anyway, I have a b-17 in honey which has darkened nicely over time. Why don't you just grab a saddle cover? They you can cover up the brooks while you ride it with these special pants, and uncover when you are wearing regular pants.

I don't think hipsters wear raw denim. It is tacky and ugs.

Not that hipsters aren't tacky.

Well, that is, if raw denim means the kind that is supposed to look distressed. Like at American Eagle?

FWIW, I usually go like a month in the same pair of jeans before washing them. B) They shrink up in the wash, and after a week or two they loosen up to fit beautifully, so I just keep going.

This has nothing to do with bikes however.

Don't use salt! It tends to draw dye out of fabric. You can actually make a new shirt look vintage by soaking it in salt.

If you are concerned about dye running out of the jeans then soak them in ice water. This will help to set the dye and then iron them on top of some clean paper, this will permanently set the dye.

Finally, why the **** does anyone care if a saddle changes color!?!! It shows that the bike has been ****ing ridden. God! ****!

I've always washed mine in salt if they are dark wash. Not a lot, just enough to make it slightly isotonic. I Googled and other people do it. But who knows ... could still be wrong.

The most important thing, imo, is not throwing them in the dryer.

This thread has gotten really fashionista, but I guess it kinda stared that way. The problem with adding salt to water is that many municipal water sources already have a certain amount salt added or from nature, by adding salt you only increase the concentration of the solution. There are dye fixative products out there though, but several washings to remove excess dye is still probably the best option or dry cleaning to be truely hipster.

Am I understanding this correctly? your goin' a month wearing the same pair of jeans and not washing them?
Just out of curiousity do you guys have a social life, girlfriends, etc.? Jeez I can't imagine a women that would want to get within spittin' distance of someone who doesn't wash thier clothes for a month! and if your that lax on the clothes washing what about personnal hygeine?
But hey I guess you just can't put a price on fashion.....Man I'd hate to be the poor schmuck who buys your used brooks, imagine his/her surprise when they open that box! thats gotta smell like the ****ehouse door on a tuna boat!

I've easily gone six months without washing jeans... I usually buy the Levis XX shrink to fit ('crispier' more rigid denim). After even two washes they get all soft, and turn too indigo, which some people like, I don't.

Smells, on people, on clothes, on the street are caused by bacteria. If you don't give constant fuel (in the form of dead skin etC) to the bacteria then it's not going to stink; it's science.

As long as you're not wearing the jeans 24 hours a day, running marathons etc etc, and you rotate between a couple pairs (read: give them time to dry out/breathe), or other clothes, they're not going to smell. If all else fails mix a couple oz of vodka in a spray bottle w/ ~8oz. of water and right after you're done wearing them give the crotch / ass a couple of sprays and leave them to dry.

It's like your shoes... most people don't ever wash their shoes, even though it's way more humid and musty and your ass or crotch and gets almost no ventilation. Most people's feet don't stink either because they own more than one pair and give them sufficient time to dry out so stinkiness isn't a problem. the vodka thing also works on shoes...

Yo Brohams,
Come on! six months? i'm just not gittin' it...when you take them off do they stand by themselves in the corner? If I were you I'd save the vodka for doin some shots when your sittin home by yourself because no one wants to get near you.....you must be the real life of the party...just funnin' with ya but it does seem alittle odd to me...do what ya want want stanky drawers!

Not to sound super uncool, but what's wrong with wearing regular jeans. I buy mine at Koals, 30 bucks levi lowrise slim fit, and they fit fine, and don't have to worry about salt in my wash or other special ****. wear 'em twice or so, then wash 'em.

They fit fine, and look the same as the more expensive ones at the boutique shops.

On the six months thing. I rarely wear undies. Six months would be disgusting. Its not like your any different ten the rest of us. Butt-holes and beanbags sweat, and what about farts.

I wear Levi's too, the 510s. But regardless of the brand, I still want them to look nice. I don't like the leeched dye look, so I try and wash them as infrequently as possible, and when I do, I am careful with how I wash them.

Expensive jeans are nice too. I have 1 pair of Marc Jacobs jeans that I really love, and I am glad I paid the money I did for them. I can't compare the Levi's to these of course ... but they are each nice in their own way. I am not going to wear these jeans to some dingy dive bar, after all. Everything has a time and place, right? :D

Either pair though, I still wash the same way. I try to take good care of my (few) belongings. Like the thread talking about immaculate bikes ... why shouldn't we take good care of the things we love?

dry denim will definitely bleed on your brooks... i've seen a indigo/honey one lolz.

i just put a white turbo on my bike and i KNOW it's gonna be a blue turbo within the first 5 minutes of ass to saddle contact.

and for those who care at all i'm wearing some flatheads (1 cold soak/unwashed for 3 months lolz)

Haha I'm impressed this created so much hate. Thankyou haywire for understanding. Anyway, I had assumed dry denim was more common, I swear half of Melbourne is wearing nudies, which for what it's worth come with a label recommending 6 months wear unwashed. Most people ignore it I'm sure, but it's there. Regardless of jeans style or washing I would have thought brooks honeys might have this problem anyway, they are light as, surely they get diacoloured pretty easy.. One person mentioned one darkening up, is that from sun tanning or general sweat/proofide?

And on the gay laundry care side, salts good, vinegars better, although smelly if you use too much, and washing with pure soap not some phosphate loaded optical brightening crap helps too

11-19-08, 02:53 PM
I don't wash my jeans frequently, but I do think 6 months is overkill.

I'd rather dry clean them then deal with the stench of 6 month unwashed jeans.

I love my jeans too, but maybe I like the "wore in" look, I dunno. I work in my jeans a lot, so maybe I'm just used to not getting attached.

Now that I think of it, the fist thing I do to all my jeans when new is wash them a bunch of times to soften them up.

One more thing, do you guys wash them when you buy them? Think of all the people, some like me who don't wear underwear, trying them on in the store. You take them home and wear them right away. Yeah, you try them on after everyone elses junk has touched them, but think of it this way; touch your junk to another mans junk for a few seconds. Its weird and gross, but imagine junk touches lasting six months. All your junk sweat, his junk sweat getting all friendly. Now think of your butt-holes touching too. Maybe after having mexican for lunch.

Disclaimer: I do not recommend, and do not myself, go around rubbing my genitals on other guys genitals. Just an example.
