Qualifying runs are over. This team gets serious style points. Check out the cool SS:

I work in the shop with a girl who captains/races on one of the teams. They had those Mongoose bikes up in the shop assembling them.
Sheesh...
You really can't see it on the photo, but they put 2003 on the seat tube instead of 2004.
The team in the photo is the Army ROTC team. I'm thinking you do not mess with them.

Is that a 1 piece steel crank and MTB rat trap pedals on the same frame with what looks like a carbon rear rim?

Funky bike!

Is it fixed? No clips would make that very interesting, I'd think.

I've associated Mongoose with BMX since my youth and more lately with mass-retail but I haven't seen a roadie (at least a new one) with a 1 piece crank since I was a good bit younger.

I think the rules call for a one-piece crank and a coaster brake, but I've been wrong before.

I can't tell if that's a SS freewheel or a coaster from the photo. If I recall correctly, they all have the same bikes w/1 pc cranks. It appears Mongoose is sponsoring the event by providing bikes.

Interesting..

I've never claimed comprehensive knowledge but this is something about which I know nothing. Other than cranks the bike looks modern and even high end.

The bike has no caliper brakes so if it isn't coaster braked I guess riders coast in as I can't see an organized race allowing fixed w/o clips/straps or modern pedals.

Could I strip down a Schwinn, maybe a vintage Super Sport and compete?

On closer looks that is a threaded headset and quill stem so maybe not completely modern but seat and seatpost look contemporary as do the wheels.

the bike was made in outer mongolia or someplace like that...i watched them put one together in our shop. the frame almost looks like it will not amke it through the race.

this is not high end stuff...they basically get the bike given to them for the entry fee but every team rides the same type of bike.

I kind of doubt they're coaster brakes on those bikes. Haven't you seen Breaking Away? jeff

Thanks for the info. Pictures can be deceiving.

I went and looked up the rules. Coaster brakes indeed. Knew it couldn't be fixed as that'd be quite dangerous w/o clips.

in the lower right corner of the photo its clear the brakes are locked up.
