I swear buy Jim Lahey’s bread recipe and technique, it's so basic and yields a superior loaf. watch the video accompanying the story -it's really that easy..

There's a winter cycling forum here. Have a look around.

Dress warm and be brave.
But aren't you exaggerating a little? The snow rarely comes down by the foot, does it? And the roadways are generally scraped and salted, aren't they? Just try to ride your bike a couple miles next week when the roads are clear. I think you'll be surprised at how easily it goes.

I'm still wearing sandals, thanks to wool. :D
Thrift stores and Army Surplus are great sources for cheap wool goods. Check the labels carefully, though.

I would probably run around butt nekkid if not for thrift stores! Somethings I have to buy new because of my requirements for tall sizes but otherwise I am a thrift store hound! Last week picked up a Chamois shirt(still had the tags), fleece vest, wool sweater and wool sweater vest for ~$8:D

Not the jeans but the Carhartt version (http://www.carhartt.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=10051&productId=73646&langId=-1&categoryId=10935#) I typically wear these when the weather is flaky...going from freezing to 50 degrees in a few hours. I prefer the canvas over denim. Also prefer loose fit over the typical tight jean fit. I buy mine in July when it is 104 degrees...get a helluva deal then:roflmao2:

I'm not car free, but I am working toward being more car-lite (and maybe car-free again if I move back to where I used to live). This has been a huge help to me, although it doesn't make much difference if you A. Don't have a car at all or B. Have a garage/ground floor entry.
I live on the 3rd floor of an apartment. I have a couple of different bikes upstairs, including my commuter. It is kind of an expensive bike for me to feel comfortable locking it up outside for longer shopping trips, though... and for short trips it seems like a pain in the butt to get it all out and down the stairs, etc.
So I dropped a few bucks (like $80, but it was exactly what I wanted) on a bike to leave locked up outside. I now use this for short, quick trips that had forced me to take the car before (because it is so much easier to walk down to my car instead of carrying a bike up and down the stairs.) It has saved me a lot of car usage. I got an English Sports bike. It is a Royal Scot, made by Raleigh. I'm the 2nd owner. Doesn't look like much, but it has fenders and a Sturmey Archer 3sp. It isn't a theft magnet by any means if it does get ripped off its only $80, not $800+.
I call it my knock-around or beater. I recommend anyone who is in a similar situation as me gets one as well.
